Since moving out of the studio space that a group of us has shared, I have been setting up 2 of my looms at home and trying to organize all that fiber in a much smaller space. My 54″ Glimakra will be in storage but just about everything else is stuffed into a few areas of my home. This room is now my loom room, with my Schact baby wolf loom. It started out as a guest bedroom and playroom for the kids. The bed below is one of my favorite places in the house. Great place to curl up with a book on a cold rainy day. We built this bed after seeing the book The Scandinavian Look, Country by Design. It features a home built in the swedish style, designed by Lou Heiser for Loran Nordgren. The home is actually about 8 miles from where I live. I had the pleasure of visiting this incredible country home to talk to Loren about his alpacas and once to demonstrate spinning during a fiber gathering. I will try to dig up some of those photos to share in a future post.

Cottons and prairie grasses used for weaving. Mostly big blue stem.

knitting yarns vs. weaving yarns

This is the loft of our log home, nice views and a great place to weave. I just have to be careful not to shoot the shuttle over the edge onto the dining room table below. It’s been done. I actually dropped a reed over the edge once. DH put a “hard hat area-weaver at work” sign up, after that one.
I am enjoying working at home and am trying to find the balance between family and fiber. Being organized with my time to make sure that I am weaving or spinning enough is especially challenging in the summer. Running the kids around and gardening are constant distractions. (I am still pretty good at ignoring the messy house.) But then I have to remind myself that a big part of this move home is to put my priorities right and my family comes first. The kids are growing up so fast.

Office space in the loft

I am glad to have brought this great old farmhouse table from the shop. It makes a great work table. My dye studio is downstairs in my former stained glass studio, and not quite put together enough for pictures. But I need to get that workable soon because the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival is coming up soon. September 11th-13th.
